Andrés Enrique-Arias holds a PhD in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, USA). Currently he is a professor of Spanish historical linguistics at the University of the Baleric Islands in Mallorca (Spain).
He has been Principal Investigator of the Biblia medieval project since its beginning in 2004. Besides coordinating the research group and the search for funding he participates in corpus design, preparing the texts for the database, data mining and analysis, and creation of the web page and associated resources.
His main research interest is Spanish historical morphosyntax (more precisely phenomena related to clitics and the expression of possession) for which he uses a synthesis of methods and traditions: the functional-typological framework, the contrastive analysis of Romance varieties, the attention to philological aspects in the selection of textual corpora for diachronic studies, the use of electronic resources and the application of quantitative methods from variationist sociolinguistics. Likewise, he has published several articles on methodological issues related to the study of linguistic variation through historical texts. He has also devoted considerable attention to philological aspects of the medieval traslations of the Bible into Spanish and has edited important biblical manuscripts such as Escorial I.i.6 and Real Academia de la Historia ms. 87. Currently he is working on a critical edition of the Bible translation and commentary by Moisés Arragel.
Andrés Enrique Arias has published over fifty articles and book chapters in venues such as Language Variation and Change, Studies in Language, Sefarad, Revista de Filología Española, Iberorromania, Romance Philology o Bulletin of Hispanic Studies.
